Joe Kurth helps roll out the red carpet for Notre Dame guests

SOUTH BEND -- Joe Kurth, who just marked his fifth anniversary as senior director and general manager of Morris Inn and the Notre Dame Conference Center, will be a busy man this weekend as he and hundreds of other people at the inn as well as Sorin’s and Rohr’s work to provide an exceptional experience for commencement visitors this weekend at the University of Notre Dame.

Q. How does commencement stack up to a football weekend?

A. Our team is excited to welcome a sold-out weekend for our rooms, and then the flow of thousands of excited family and friends. There are more events throughout many places on campus than a typical football game over several days, and the campus map remains the most requested item.

Q. How many people will be served in the hotel and restaurants?

A. We coordinate the reservations for hundreds of housing requests, and thousands of meals on campus. With over 2,000 employees, all of the Notre Dame service family of departments come together to support this key special event weekend.

Q. How long has planning been underway?

A. Commencement planning is an annual event for the entire campus — from friends and family looking to book for future years to logistics in all areas.

Q. How much food, wine or Champagne will be served?

A. Champagne is a very popular order in the hotel, along with something new this year — being able to purchase the Notre Dame Family of Wines directly from Rohr’s in the Morris Inn as a special last-minute gift idea.

Q. Any lessons you learned?

A. The addition of new spaces on campus construction in recent years has created the opportunity to centralize our sales and events offices on campus. Our new Venue ND team is able to support a seamless experience for guests arriving on campus for commencement, and countless other experiences throughout the year.
