NRA: Make your restaurant stand out on Small Business Saturday

Nov. 28 is Small Business Saturday®, a day founded by American Express to help small businesses do more business.  Created in 2010, Small Business Saturday has grown from an idea to a holiday shopping tradition. According to the Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey, 88 million people participated in Small Business Saturday in 2014. This year, American Express, in partnership with the National Restaurant Association, hopes to make it even bigger.

Here are suggestions to maximize your participation efforts:

Plan early. Create “Shop Small” menu specials leading up to and on Small Business Saturday. Publicize what’s new and unique-to-you and your restaurant on Small Business Saturday and beyond. Share using the hashtags #ShopSmall #DineSmall.

Partner with other small businesses and showcase the tight-knit aspect of the small business community. For example, Dos Toros Taqueria owner Leo Kremer in New York is going to spread the word by marketing other businesses’ Small Business Saturday specials as well as his own. “I’m going to reach out to my local coffee shop and pizza place and try to cross-promote,” he said.

Give customers a reason to do business with you. Go to ShopSmall.com/industry and take advantage of free event guides. You can also learn about what American Express is providing to small business owners to prepare for the day, such as email templates and downloadable, customizable marketing materials.

Get on the Shop Small map, and help customers find your business. Qualifying small merchants who accept American Express credit cards will be featured on the Shop Small map, an easy-to-use customer resource that finds small businesses near the user.
